{"id":6844,"date":"2018-09-30T20:49:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-30T20:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dannydorling.org\/?p=6844"},"modified":"2022-09-11T21:00:33","modified_gmt":"2022-09-11T21:00:33","slug":"so-when-was-this-series-of-periodic-bad-winters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dannydorling.org\/?p=6844","title":{"rendered":"So, when was this series of &#8220;periodic bad winters&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The author of a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj.k4050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent BMJ editorial<\/a> claims that: &#8220;<em>In summary, the general deceleration in mortality improvements in many high income countries since 2010 has been compounded by periodic bad winters.<\/em>&#8220;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>ONS have <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/improving-life-expectancy-used-to-be-the-uks-forte-now-its-falling-behind-101573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the deceleration to be greater in the UK than all other 20 affluent countries they compared, with the sole exception of the USA. In many of those countries there was no deceleration and, in some, an actual acceleration of previous improvements. The Conservative MP Robert Court and others <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/improving-life-expectancy-used-to-be-the-uks-forte-now-its-falling-behind-101573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a> to this news by suggesting a natural plateauing was occurring and that there are many complex factors at play including cold winter weather since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2012\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2011\/12<\/a> UK &#8220;temperatures in the UK were 0.9 \u00b0C above the 1971-2000 average.<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2013\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012\/13<\/a> UK temperatures were &#8220;0.4 \u00b0C below the 1981-2010 average.&#8221; However, note that the baseline had change (to 1981-2010), and the largest rise in excess deaths had not yet begun by 2012\/13.<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2014\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2013\/2014<\/a> UK temperatures were &#8220;0.5 \u00b0C above the 1981-2010 average.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2015\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014\/2015<\/a> UK temperatures were &#8220;0.2 \u00b0C above the 1981-2010 average.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2016\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015\/2016<\/a> UK temperatures were &#8220;1.8 \u00b0C above the 1981-2010 average&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2017\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016\/2017<\/a> UK temperatures were &#8220;1.3 \u00b0C above the 1981-2010 average.&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>In the winter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/climate\/uk\/summaries\/2018\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017\/2018<\/a> UK temperatures were &#8220;0.2 \u00b0C below the 1981-2010 average&#8221;. However, in the December of that winter, when that year&#8217;s rapid rise in deaths began: &#8220;temperatures 0.4 \u00b0C above average&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>So, when was this series of &#8220;periodic bad winters&#8221;?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I am a professor of Geography. I understand how to measure the weather.<\/p>\n<p>I sincerely hope my colleagues from epidemiology, social statistics, public health, social policy and virology will help explain what else in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj.k4050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a> needs to be questioned.
