{"id":6708,"date":"2018-07-28T22:12:17","date_gmt":"2018-07-28T22:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dannydorling.org\/?p=6708"},"modified":"2022-09-18T21:13:13","modified_gmt":"2022-09-18T21:13:13","slug":"after-the-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dannydorling.org\/?p=6708","title":{"rendered":"After the Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost six weeks after the inquiry was announced no deadline has been set for Public Health England&#8217;s inquiry report into mortality rate rises across all of England.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v40\/n14\/letters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lawrence Paulson<\/a> mentions a recent study in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmjopen\/2017\/11\/15\/health-and-social-care-spending-cuts-linked-to-120000-excess-deaths-in-england\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMJ Open<\/a> which estimates that because past improvements have stalled, by 2020 there will be an additional 152,000 deaths in the UK (LRB Letters, 19 July 2018). On 18 June the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/articles\/quarterlymortalityreports\/januarytomarch2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> reported a further annual 5 per cent absolute rise in mortality across England. This was after they had taken into account the effects of ageing, and is <strong>in addition<\/strong> to the estimated 152,000.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these deaths occurred before the weather turned very cold in February and, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/articles\/quarterlymortalityreports\/januarytomarch2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONS reported<\/a>, \u2018<em>influenza activity remained at medium levels throughout the whole of January and February 2018<\/em>.\u2019 On 20 March Jeremy Hunt [who was then Secretary of State for Health] had incorrectly stated in the House of Commons that mortality rates had \u2018<em><a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/commons\/2018-03-20\/debates\/3E71DB83-CDBA-4A69-9701-73C78A781CD6\/TopicalQuestions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remained broadly stable over recent years<\/a>\u2019<\/em>. When his error became apparent, Hunt sanctioned an inquiry by Public Health England into the rise in mortality rates. No deadline has been set for the inquiry\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p>As Zosia Kmietowicz reported on June 26th in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2795\">The British Medical Journal<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The government is commissioning a review of the spike in deaths seen in England and Wales this year, after the issue was raised in the BMJ. &#8230;
