In 1906 Finland was still an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian empire, but its national assembly granted universal suffrage to all adult men and women, including not only the right to vote, but also to stand for election. In 1907, 19 women, most of whom are shown in this photograph taken that year, were elected to Finland’s single-chamber parliament. Among them was Miina Sillanpää, who in 1927 became the first female minister and was a Member of Parliament for 38 years. In 2016 the government made 1 October a flag day to honour her (Korpela, 2006).
