Inequality, the 1%, and the future

Inequality, the 1%, and the future

Ilkley Literature Festival, Yorkshire, October 17th 2015.

There is no way that everyone can be rich. Only 1% of people can be in the best-off 1%. And the 1% in the UK take more than the best-off 1% almost anywhere else in Europe. Does this make the rest of us better-off; or all of us worse off, and – if so – what is to be done? What is happening to the north-south divide? In what direction is the housing market currently heading? If currently trends continue what is the future for our children and grandchildren in the UK? This talk considered how the UK compares to similar affluent countries in terms of inequality and how that infuse our education, employment, housing and overall security. What would it take to change our current direction of travel?
